This last fall, a new baby rhino was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The story of his birth to his mother Kendi was documented by National Geographic for the Disney+ series Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
As time moves forward, this baby rhino has grown and had many first milestones. These have been put together in a video by Disney. In it, the baby rhino also reveals his name!
According to the Disney Parks Blog, Ranger’s name was very important for this rhino.
Our keeper team wanted to make sure our baby boy had a name with special significance – they wanted his name to honor the wildlife rangers who protect rhinos around the world. Rhinos are the world’s second largest land animal and among the most endangered animals in the wild due to poaching.
The Disney Conservation Fund continues to support rhino conservation. Having Ranger as the name for this rhino is just one more way. The Disney Conservation Fund has already given more than 75 grants and awards towards rhino protection projects. This includes a recent Disney Conservation Fund Hero award to rhino ranger Sgt. Mutindo Ndivo with the Big Life Foundation. He works to protect rhinos and other wildlife in an area that is over 1.6 million acres in East Africa.
More details about all of these efforts can be found at @DisneyConservation on Facebook or Instagram. You can also follow @DrMarkAtDisney on Instagram and @DisneyASE on Facebook as well.
Ranger is already a favorite at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Soon, he will be joining the crash (a group of rhinos) on the savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris. DAPS MAGIC will continue to follow this story and provide more updates as they become available.
