Next year a new documentary will be released that will dig into one of Star Wars’ most infamous programs. Yesterday, on Life Day, it was announced that there will be a new documentary focused on the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special. It was released between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Since then, George Lucas (and Lucasfilm) have done just about everything possible to make it disappear.
Through the years though, dedicated fans have found copies of this film and it has become legendary in its own way. Now, this legend will be set in stone with A Disturbance in the Force. This documentary will be brought to the world by directors Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak. It will give a behind the scenes look at the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special.
In this program, the directors hope to put the Star Wars Holiday Special into a perspective where it makes much more sense. “We put it in proper context—against the backdrop of the TV-variety genre to see it from the eyes that produced it,” Kozak said to io9. “If you saw the Special when it aired in 1978, you probably liked it. If you saw it for the first time—or saw it again 25 years later on after the launch of YouTube—it was quite jarring.”

A Disturbance in the Force Trailer
Currently, the documentary is in process of being edited. The team has gotten a plethora of the original production team to share their experiences. In fact, they found most of them more than willing to do just that. There was even a never-heard-before interview with Peter Mayhew that was uncovered about the Star Wars Holiday Special. On top of that, they found over 15 hours of interviews from two decades ago about the special. However, there are some more interviews that directors would like to get. This includes Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, or Jon Favreau (a huge fan of the Star Wars Holiday Special), and of course George Lucas himself.
At this time a specific release date is unknown, or where it will be released. The directors’ dream would be for it to be released on Disney+. That could be a stretch if Lucasfilm continues to ignore the existence of the Star Wars Holiday Special.
