Disneyland Reaches Reopening Agreement With 11 Cast Member Unions

The Disneyland Resort has reached agreements with 11 of its cast member unions. The deal will allow the Disneyland Resort to recall cast members quickly whenever they are able to reopen. According to the OC Register, the 11 unions represent most Disneyland cast members. The agreements cover the health and safety protocols that will be utilized to bring back cast members in a responsible way.

One of the unions that the Disneyland Resort has reached an agreement with is Workers United Local 50, which represents food and beverage cast members. Workers United Local 50 shared the agreement highlights on their Facebook page:

Update-Recall from Furlough
Over the weekend we were able to come to agreement on the Recall from Furlough. We had a few topics that were holding up this agreement. First was Covid19 sick pay which California legislature has passed a bill providing 80 hours of sick pay for Covid 19. Testing was the 2nd item which previously stated is resolved. Here are some of the highlights.
• Recall from furlough will be done by scheduling group, classification and in classification seniority order.
• Leads, Trainers, some premium positions and some Carthay Circle classifications will be recalled separately with restrictions.
• Notification of recall will be by telephone at least 7 days in advance.
• If the first phone call wasn’t answered, there will be another call 45 minutes later to follow up.
• If you’re unable to return to work you can decline and if you don’t respond to calls within 3 days you will remain on furlough. Company will move to the next person in seniority order.
• If you change your mind about returning, you may request to be recalled on the next wave of recalls.
• If you have to isolate yourself or miss work because of work, you will not receive any points and will be paid.
• Cast will be subject to health screenings when they report to work. If a temperature reads above 100.4 degrees, cast members will be sent home with report pay.

The Disneyland Resort has also made deals on reopening with 10 other unions including Master Services Council, Independent Employee Services Association, Craft Maintenance Council and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

While all these deals are now in place enabling the Disneyland Resort to reopen from an operational standpoint, they will not be able to do this until guidelines are released from the state of California. Once those guidelines are released and the Disneyland Resort conforms with them, the parks will be able to reopen. At this time, it is unknown just when those guidelines will be released. Representatives of the state of California has said the guidelines will be released “when they are ready.”. In recent days, the California governor sent a team to Florida to see the health and safety protocols in effect there at Walt Disney World Resort and other theme parks. California officials will also be going to California theme parks to see what their protocols are as well.

While California continues to put together guidelines, Disney maintains that it is ready to reopen the Disneyland Resort parks in a safe and responsible manner. Disneyland President Ken Potrock said last month, “We are ready to open responsibly, it is the time to open responsibly and it’s important to open responsibly.”

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are the only two Disney theme parks that haven’t reopened since closing seven months ago due to the pandemic. Shanghai Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Walt Disney World Resort have all reopened their theme parks successfully after closing them due to COVID-19.

All of this is happening as the Disney Parks, Experience and Products announced the layoffs of 28,000 cast members. These layoffs have been happening over the last two weeks. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has expressed that he hopes the Disneyland Resort will be reopening soon to avoid more future layoffs.

DAPS MAGIC will continue to pursue this story and provide updates as they become available. Share your thoughts in the comments below on this development for the reopening of the Disneyland Resort theme parks! What do you think?
