This week, Disney came out with big casting news! In the new Disney live-action film Peter Pan and Wendy, Yara Shahidi from ABC’s Black-ish and Grown-ish will be portraying the lovable fairy Tinker Bell!
Yara Shahidi joins Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson who are slated to play the title characters. Jude Law will also play the infamous Captain Hook! David Lowery will direct the project and also co-wrote the script with Tony Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker is on board to direct the project!
Many fans have drawn comparison to when Disney announced that Halle Bailey would be playing Ariel last year. Both characters have been traditionally portrayed by white actresses and will now be played by Black women! While I am excited about this step from Disney, I hope this leads to the company to write more original Black characters in the future.
I am absolutely excited to see this film when it hits theaters in the future! At this time, it’s expected to have a theatrical release in 2021, but as we know things can change at any time.
