Disney’s live-action The Lion King that was directed by Jon Favreau is getting a sequel and Barry Jenkins is directing it. The 2019 photo-realistic version of this film garnered $1.5 billion at the global box office. It was a remake of the 1994 Disney animated classic.
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said to Deadline. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
At this time, a release date isn’t known for this sequel. It also isn’t known when the main production will get started. The film will focus on the early years of Mufasa while also moving the story forward after the events of 2019’s The Lion King. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 version is returning to write the sequel.
2019’s The Lion King had a powerhouse cast that included Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen and as Timon and Pumbaa and James Earl Jones as Mufasa. Casting for the sequel is unknown at this time. With this, it isn’t known if any of these actors will be returning to participate in this film.
