Tom Hanks is reportedly in early discussions to play Geppetto in a new version of Pinocchio being directed by Robert Zemeckis. The news, being reported by Deadline, has Tom Hanks reaching out to Zemeckis to express interest after reading the script.
The Disney remake has wanted Tom Hanks for the role of Geppetto for quite some time. At one point when Paul King was attached as the director Hanks was approached about the role. That ended up not happening and King has been replaced by Zemeckis. Hanks and Zemeckis have a long relationship having worked together since Forrest Gump. Since then, they have worked together on Cast Away and The Polar Express.
For this version of Pinocchio, Zemeckis will be directing with Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz producing through their Depth of Field company. Chris Weitz and Robert Zemeckis are penning the script.
Disney originally released Pinocchio in 1940. It tells the story of a young puppet who longs strives to become a real boy with the help of Jiminy Cricket. This remake continues the trend that Disney has of remaking animated films into live-action productions. Last year both Aladdin and The Lion King both garnered over a billion dollars.
At this time there aren’t more specific details regarding this film. Disney has not confirmed casting discussions with Hanks. DAPS MAGIC will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
