Disney Unveils New Face Coverings Made by Cast Members for Cast Members

Disney has unveiled new face coverings that have been designed by cast members for cast members. As they have become part of daily life due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19, face coverings have also become a part of Disney’s various costumes. The face coverings that were revealed today will be worn in all of Disney’s domestic parks.

The face coverings were designed together by both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort costuming teams, along with Disney Parks Live Entertainment, Worldwide Safety Services and Global Applied Technology. The project to create them was done remotely to incorporate the efforts at both Resorts.

“Over the past several months, we’ve spent significant time and brainpower to provide our cast members with face coverings that are both functional and comfortable, and I’m proud of the incredible results,” said Dr. Pamela Hymel, Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer. “They fit well, feel great and can last for more than 50 washes.”

The project came to be with the recognition that Disney cast members needed face coverings that had a cohesive look and were also functional. The team that came up with these face coverings worked together to create these face coverings that were unique to the parks, reusable, and also specifically designed for cast members.

The design for the face coverings pulled from all over Disney. This includes classic Disney characters, films, and television shows. The goal is that the pattern represents the unity that each dreamer cast member has in common – joy, magic, and a little pixie dust. Look closely and see there are some sparkles of pixie dust and Mickey constellations as it reminds all that “the second star to the right shines in the dreamy night and reminds us to keep wishing upon that evening star.”

“The unified design speaks to the fact that we are still one unified Cast, one Disney ‘world,’” shared Yonit Olshan, Costume Designer, Disneyland Resort Costuming. “As a creative team, we gained so much from each other’s experience and exposure to different types of problems and projects.”

The face coverings are offered in two styles for cast members. They come either pleated and contoured. There are also multiple sizes. They all feature adjustable spandex over the ears, extended nose pinch to the face, contoured shape under the eyes, and are lightweight, quick-drying material. The team went through great lengths to find fabrics that were both comfortable but also functional. Lots of different fabrics were sourced and tested.

These new face coverings continue Disney’s efforts to create a safe environment for cast members as the Disney Parks continued their phased reopenings. This is a process that requires the partnership of both cast members and guests as they wear face coverings and follow other safety protocols to make Disney Parks as safe of an environment as is possible.

At this time, Walt Disney World Resort’s main four parks, multiple resort hotels, and Disney Springs are in the midst of their phased reopening. The Disneyland Resort has only reopened the Downtown Disney District, however. It is unknown when the parks and hotels will be reopening at the Disneyland Resort at this time.
