Disney Releasing Mulan on Disney+ in September

Disney will be releasing Mulan on Disney+ starting on September 4th. The announcement came today on an earnings call from Bob Chapek. This comes after the film has seen its release date moved multiple times due to the impact of COVID-19.

When it is released on September 4th, Mulan will be available for a premium on Disney+ of an additional $29.99  in the United States and other countries where Disney+ is offered. Where Disney+ isn’t offered, the film will still be offered in theaters when it is possible to do so.

COVID-19 has disrupted the entertainment industry significantly. Movies throughout the years have gotten new release dates. Earlier this year Hamilton was moved from a theatrical release date in 2021 to being released on Disney+. Mulan is the first movie to be given an additional cost on Disney+, it’s streaming service that launched last November.

At this time Disney is making release decisions like this on a case by case basis. It is unknown how this will impact future releases. Disney has stated that it expects to go to a more traditional release model once the coronavirus pandemic allows for theatrical releases to happen again.
