Star Trek: Lower Decks Scene Shared During Comic-Con@Home Panel

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be arriving on CBS All Access on August 6th. Just weeks ahead of its arrival during a virtual Star Trek panel for Comic-Con@Home, a first look shared one of the scenes that will be seen in this show. The clip shows what two crewmembers from the U.S.S. Cerritos are up to while on shore leave. In it, Jack Quaid voices Ensign Brad Boimler and Tawny Newsome voices Ensign Beckett Mariner.

The clip shows the humor that will be brought to Star Trek: Lower Decks. It also shows a slight change in mission for the crew of this ship versus some of the previous Star Trek series that has been more focused on the First Contact ships. With this knowledge, expect the tone and focus of this ship and series to be a bit different than previous Star Trek adventures.

So What Did You Think?

Star Trek: Lower Decks is going to be an interesting and fun show. It will be a humorous take on Star Trek. The different perspectives being offered on the world of Star Trek in this series are fascinating. Traditionally, it’s been about the Enterprise boldly going where no one has gone before. The Cerritos instead is going where one ship has gone before it sounds like. This is if the mission does end up being Second Contact. This could be much like the U.S.S. Grissom’s mission in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This could really open up a whole other part of Starfleet as it explores the different support functions needed to “boldly go.” The theme of support missions really appears to be carried through the entire show as the primary characters aren’t the bridge crew this time but the crew members that work down below on the lower decks of the ship. It’s an interesting premise that I hope is explored as the show moves forward.

This series also takes place in 2380, which is after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. This explains the uniforms and potentially will start filling more of the 20-year gap that currently exists between Nemesis and Star Trek: Picard. There have been some large events shared and also some tidbits about what happened with Picard during those times but there is a lot of stories to be explored and told during this time. Without going into too many spoilers, this time period appears to happen between major events in the current history of Starfleet. It will be great to see how this series connects with other known events in the Star Trek timeline.

Finally, there are quite a few connections already being made in just this clip of Star Trek: Lower Decks. These aren’t necessarily connections to big historical events but they are connections to the bigger world of Star Trek that fans know and love. The first scene with Spacedock is stylistically familiar to fans of the movies with the original Captain Kirk and crew. It also would be familiar to fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. There is also the “captain’s log,” Batleth, LCARS screens on the wall, familiar feeling ship in style to those seen in The Next Generation. There is a lot to look forward to.

If there are any concerns to be had with Star Trek: Lower Decks, it would simply be that the irreverence is taken too far.  In fact, when the show was announced, that was the biggest concern. However, the more that is shown of the show the further that worry has been pushed away. Star Trek: Lower Decks looks to be a fun show that will be enjoyed by current fans and also bring in some new ones!
