Disney+ Gets 64% Lift in Downloads Thanks to Hamilton

This weekend Disney+ released the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton. Originally the film was purchased with the intent for it to be released on the silver screen. However, with the impacts of the coronavirus, the musical’s release was moved from the big screen to home screens via Disney+. The release date was also pushed forward. After spending $75 million on this movie, Disney is looking for this to give a big boost to its streaming service.

Sensor Tower, an app download research firm, released data to Yahoo Finance from the weekend on Disney+. Sensor Tower found that Disney+ had a 64% bump in downloads for the week of June 29 to July 5 compared to the week before. Another research firm, Apptopia, shared with Variety that Disney+ had a 72% spike in downloads over the course of the weekend Hamilton was released compared to the previous four weekends.

This news comes just weeks after Disney+ suspended its free trial for new subscribers. This means all of these new subscribers to Disney+ are paying customers. This is a much-needed win for Disney that has had many of its businesses shut down due to the impacts of COVID-19. It’s theme parks and stores are slowly beginning phased reopenings around the world but recovery will take some time. The movie business is also greatly impacted still with movies like Mulan getting released pushed back. It is unknown when theaters and big movies will be returning and how quickly viewers will return when they do reopen.

While the business has been struggling with in-person entertainment for Disney, Disney+ has been positive with subscriptions running ahead of projections. Over the course of the weekend, social media lit up with quotes, memes, and stories about the musical about one of America’s Founding Fathers. Hamilton kicked off a summer of Friday movie releases on Disney+ to entice even more viewers.
