Margot Robbie to Star in New Pirates of the Caribbean Film

Margot Robbie has been cast as the lead in a new female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The Birds of Prey star is joining Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey and will now be writing ya his new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, this film will not be a spinoff of the Pirates of the Caribbean films that had Johnny Depp in the lead roll. Instead, this will be a completely new story with new characters and adventures that will come under the Pirates of the Caribbean flag. All of these movies are inspired the Disneyland attraction of the same name.

This movie is also a second movie that was already announced in the franchise that Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin are developing. Jerry Bruckheimer will be producing both projects however.

For Disney, Pirates of the Caribbean has been a major money maker through the years. Since originally being introduced the franchise has grossed $4.5 billion through the course of five movies. However, there have been signs of fatigue in the franchise with the last movie in the franchise not performing as well as the previous ones. In fact, the only one that it did perform better than was the original Curse of the Black Pearl filmSince then, Disney has been looking for ways to revitalize the franchise. It now appears they have two avenues to take.

Hodson is a popular writer in Hollywood. Hodson’s writing credits include Bumblebee from the Transformers franchise, The Flash, and Batgirl.

Margot Robbie has appeared in films like The Suicide Squad (and its sequel being directed by James Gunn), Bombshell, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

Both Robbie and Hodson have worked together before. They launched Lucky Exports Pitch Program in 2019. It exists to help get more female-identifying writers hired by studios to write action movies.
