Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Captain Pike, Spock, and Enterprise Returning to CBS All Access in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

“You asked, we listened. It’s happening” Ethan Peck, who portrays Science Officer Spock said in a video released by CBS All Access. This is part of an announcement of a new Star Trek show based on the years that Captain Pike commanded the Enterprise. This is approximately ten years before Captain Kirk would command the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will see Anson Mount return as Captain Pike, joined by Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn as Science Officer Spock and Number One. Together they will be exploring the galaxy and boldly going where no one has gone before. It will be “a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future,” shared Anson Mount in a video released with the announcement.

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming, CBS All Access. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”

The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. All three will also serve as executive producers on the show. They will be joined by Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez will serve as co-executive producers. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

“When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it,” said Alex Kurtzman. “These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories has yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.”

Akiva Goldsman’s name may be recognizable for Star Trek: Picard fans. He is an executive producer for the series and will continue to remain so. He will also continue to remain a part of their creative team moving forward. A second season for this show has been announced by the timeline for when it will arrive on CBS All Access is currently unknown.

“This is a dream come true, literally,” said Akiva Goldsman. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the newest addition to a steadily growing lineup of new Star Trek offerings on CBS All Access in recent years. This began with Star Trek: Discovery, which is returning later this year for its third season.  Star Trek: Picard will also be returning for a second season exploring what Jean-Luc Picard’s next adventures will be. A Section 31 based series with Michelle Yeoh is being developed. There is also a new animated series in the works Star Trek: Lower Decks, which is being developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty). Finally, there is also a CG-animated Star Trek series also being worked on for Nickelodeon.
