Frozen 2 – Mr. DAPs Home Entertainment Review

Frozen 2 continues on the story of Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven in the next chapter of the story that originated in 2013’s Oscar-Award winning animated feature film Frozen. While things seem to be going great for everyone after the events of Frozen and some of Frozen friends want nothing to change, that isn’t how things go in Arendelle. When Elsa begins to hear a voice singing to into the night, the perfect dream that appears to be living gets a little darker. What results is an adventure of discovery for Elsa, Anna, and their companions and also the background for the kingdom of Arendella.

Quality

Disney animation keeps getting more advanced and as it does the movies get more beautiful. Frozen 2 is no exception. This film is full of stunning visuals, incredible animation, and beautiful color. If you thought the first Frozen was pretty, this one will stun you. I really enjoyed the progression of how this film looked in comparison to the original. It really made for a beautifully enjoyable viewing experience. The audio is solid as well. It does exactly what it needs to do. It helps progress the story without being distracting. It all sounded great in my entertainment room.

Extras

The bonus features included with the home release of Frozen 2 really were enjoyable. Incredibly enough, I found the outtakes to be one of my favorite extras. There were also some solid making-of featurettes and deleted scenes. Kristoff’s song that wasn’t used was also very entertaining. Meet the Lopezes is a digital exclusive that is definitely worth watching too. It goes into how the songs were created.

The entire collection of bonus features were worth watching and I enjoyed sitting and watching them all in one setting. I will also say that there was a good amount of them. Sometimes it feels like there aren’t quite enough included, others there are too many. However, this collection seemed to be a good balance with the movie for an evening of movie watching followed by watching the extras. Here are the bonus features that were included with Frozen 2’s home entertainment release:

• Sing-Along Version of the Movie – Sing along with your favorite songs as you watch the movie.
• Song Selection – Jump to your favorite musical moments, with on-screen lyrics. Songs include Oscar®-nominated “Into The Unknown,” “All Is Found,” “Some Things Never Change,” “When I Am Older,” “Lost in the Woods,” “Show Yourself,” and “The Next Right Thing”
• Outtakes – Laugh along with the cast of “Frozen 2” as they record their lines, sing their songs and have fun in the recording booth.
• Deleted Scenes – Check out a few scenes that never made the final cut.
  • Intro – Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck offer a glimpse into their filmmaking process with scenes that didn’t make the final cut.
  • Prologue – A battle rages between Arendelle and the Northuldra while a mysterious figure challenges King Agnarr.
  • Secret Room – A secret room reveals even more of Anna and Elsa’s past, including a shocking revelation about their mother.
  • Elsa’s Dream – Anna’s playful glimpse into Elsa’s dream takes a dark turn.
  • Hard Nokks – Kristoff reveals his true feelings about life in Arendelle when the Nokk won’t take no for an answer.
  • A Place of Our Own – Elsa uses her magic to relieve Anna’s lingering doubts about their parents’ faith in her.

• Deleted Songs – When it comes to “Frozen 2,” there can never be too much music. Hear some of the songs that got cut from the final film.
  • Intro – Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck revel in the chance to share a few songs that didn’t make it into the final film.
  • “Home” – Anna savors every moment as she wanders through this kingdom she calls home.
  • “I Wanna Get This Right” – Kristoff wants everything to be perfect before he proposes, leaving Anna to wonder, “Will it ever be just right?”
• The Spirits of “Frozen 2” – Cast and crew explore the Scandinavian and Nordic mythology that inspired the spirits inhabiting the enchanted forest of “Frozen 2.”
• Did You Know??? – Olaf asks us the question “Did You Know” as we discover “Frozen 2” fun facts, Easter eggs and tidbits about the making of the film.
• Scoring a Sequel – Composer Christophe Beck combines a 91-piece orchestra with 30 choral voices to create the compelling score for “Frozen 2.”
• Gale Tests – They say you can’t see the wind. Only its effects. Filmmakers give it a shot while creating the playful wind spirit, Gale.
  • Gale Test – A young girl and boy play tag in this fully animated effort to “give personality to something that’s invisible.”
  • Hand-Drawn Gale Test – A hand-drawn test to bring the precocious wind spirit to life.

• Multi-Language Reel
  • “Into the Unknown” in 29 Languages – Hear Elsa’s soaring call to adventure in 29 different languages
• Music Videos – Weezer and Panic! at the Disco lend their voices to a few of the soaring melodies from “Frozen 2.”
  • “Into the Unkown” (Panic! at the Disco version) – Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie stars in their version of “Into The Unknown” from “Frozen 2.”
  • “Lost in the Woods” (Weezer version) – Weezer puts their spin on Kristoff’s epic ballad, “Lost In the Woods.”

• Meet the Lopezes – Meet the award-winning husband-and-wife team behind the incredible songs from “Frozen” and “Frozen 2.”
• Deleted Song “Unmeltable Me” – An animatic version of Olaf’s celebratory song about his newfound freedom.

Final Thoughts

Frozen 2 is a surprisingly deep film that is also filled with Disney magic. While it has the musical and magical elements often associated with a Disney princess movie, it also surpasses expectations for the genre as it deals with issues of aging, self identity, family history, and even relations between different cultures. The result is a movie that is full of heart, depth, and a lot of Scandinavian and Nordic mythological references. It also has a solid soundtrack with a songs and score that are really enjoyable. This movie easily gets a hat tip and should be in ever Disney family’s movie library. This release in particular was very enjoyable to review. I would definitely suggest getting a hard-copy that includes a digital download to open the digital exclusive bonus features.

Frozen 2 is a wonderful movie to bring home! I actually found myself enjoying it even more in my entertainment room than I did in the theaters. Go out and get your copy and then let me know what you thought of the movie and the bonus features in the comments below!
