Why Morbius is a Sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home

A trailer for the upcoming Morbius movie by Sony Pictures has been released.  Where this is a Marvel character it was thought to be a very stand-alone film from the rest of the Marvel movies, but it does not look so.

Who is Morbius?

First of all, you are probably wondering who Morbius is.  He is a character from Marvel Comics, first originating in Spider-Man comics and even menacing him at times.  He’s been a bit of an anti-hero and known as the “Living Vampire.”  There are many qualities and curse that are similar to a vampire, but he is not exactly a vampire.  As seen in the trailer, he has enhanced strength, agility, teleporting of sorts, but must feed on blood like a vampire.  Michael Morbius, the real person alias of the vampiric creature, was someone known by Peter Parker before becoming a sort-of vampire.

The Trailer and Movie

The movie does look to be Morbius’ origin, but it does serve as a bit of a horror film.  It is, of course, about a vampire-like creature.  The trailer does play up the anti-hero vibe that this character is cursed, but has chosen to take this path.  Whether he takes the course of a hero by the end of the film is not known.  Overall, it’s not as much of a super-hero comic blockbuster as a horror film that uses a super-hero as the main protagonist…or antagonist…it’s not clear yet.

Morbius and the MCU

The surprising feature of the trailer is that the film will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!  At first, it seemed like the only connection was in the titles that proclaimed this studio did the other Spider-Man movies.  Then, one scene shows a poster of Spider-Man with graffiti over it saying “Murderer.”  This would be a direct connection to the end of Far From Home (sorry for spoilers) where J. Jonah Jameson was sent doctored footage from Mysterio showing Spider-Man killing the villain.  Finally, towards the end, there is a huge focus on a cameo of Michael Keaton who seems to be reprising Adrian Toomes, the Vulture, from Spider-Man: Homecoming.  It is always unknown whether these will end up in the final film, but the trailer is certainly showing this is officially part of the MCU.

With this clearly taking place after Spider-Man’s unfortunate framing of the death of Mysterio, this is a bit of a direct sequel to that film.  Spider-Man most likely won’t be in it, but this does show what happens in the world after Spider-Man’s accusations.  It also gives us a glimpse of what has happened to the Vulture since Homecoming.
