Frozen 2 Has a Hot Opening Weekend at the Box Office

This weekend Frozen 2 opened to fans around the globe. The results were record-breaking. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has been watching social media over the weekend and watching the discussions about the film happening.

Domestically, Frozen 2 brought in $127 million. Internationally, the Frozen sequel garnered $223.3 million. Together, this adds up to $350.2 million, making it the No. 1 global debut for an animated film of all time (not adjusting for inflation). The weekend results for this film were way beyond projections. With Thanksgiving coming this week, expect Frozen 2 to continue to ride this wave of success as word of mouth brings more fans to theaters.

Frozen 2 continues the story of Anna and Elsa. DAPS MAGIC has posted a review with spoilers and a review without spoilers for the film. It also broke some other records domestically. It had the third-best animated movie opening of all time behind 2018’s Incredibles 2 ($182.7 million) and 2016’s Finding Dory ($135.1 million) without adjusting for inflation. It also is the first animated film to be released not during the summer to pass the $100 million mark on its opening weekend.

Overseas, the movie also was breaking records in specific countries. It had the best opening for an animated film of all time in the United Kingdom ($17.8 million) and also France ($13.4 million). It also was the strongest release for a Disney or Pixar film in China ($53 million), Japan ($18.2 million), Germany ($14.9 million) and Spain ($5.8 million). In South Korea, it came in as the third biggest animated opening ($31.5 million).

For comparison, the original Frozen opened on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in 2013. It set records with a five-day domestic gross of $93 million, including $67 million for the three-day weekend. Frozen ended up making $1.64 billion globally by the end of its run. This made it the top-grossing animated film of all time. It also was one of the most successful musicals of all time.
