Spider-Man: Far From Home

Marvel Studios Collaboration With Sony on Spider-Man is Apparently Over

News about a breakdown in discussion between Sony and Disney surfaced yesterday as Marvel Cinematic Universe fans voiced displeasure about the potential of Spider-Man no longer being a part of the MCU. As the day continued, it appeared that things might not be as dire as originally reported. However, by the end of the day, it appeared that talks had indeed stopped between the two entertainment companies.

Last night, Sony released a statement clarifying their position and indicating that talks are currently over.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film,” a Sony spokesperson said. “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Currently, there are two more Spider-Man films in the works with Tom Holland and director Jon Watts. However, Jon Watts hasn’t signed a deal to return for the next movie(s). It is unknown if talks are permanently over or if Disney and Sony will return to the negotiating table. What this means for the future of Spider-Man is unknown. What is known is that a Spider-Man outside of the MCU would be controversial and it would take an excellent movie to regain the faith of Marvel/Spider-Man fans. Sony’s track-record with the character has not been stellar. It isn’t nearly as solid as Kevin Feige’s record with both Spider-Man and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
