Earthquakes Strike Near Disneyland – Safety Tips for Earthquakes at the Disneyland Resort

This week two earthquakes struck near the Disneyland Resort. The first was on the morning of the Fourth of July was a 6.4 on the Richter scale and centered around Ridgecrest, California. This is approximately 150 miles from the Disneyland Resort. The following evening, a 7.1 earthquake struck in the same region.

Both of these quakes caused safety protocols to be implemented at the Disneyland Resort. This includes attractions being shut down for safety inspections before re-opening them for guests. On social media, posts showed guests streaming out of attractions like the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in the recently opened Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. After a time, the attractions were reopened and guests were able to enjoy the rest of their Disney experience.

Earthquake Safety Tips at the Disneyland Resort

If there should be an earthquake while you are visiting the Disneyland Resort, here are a few tips to give the safest and most magical experience.

  • First off, always follow the instructions of cast members. They are responsible for your safety and will give directions that will keep you as safe as possible. Having experienced a few earthquakes at the Disneyland Resort, I can tell you that it is evident that there are contingencies and procedures in place for when earthquakes happen.
  • Drop down and take cover. Grab hold of something sturdy that is available to hold on to.
  • If you are on an attraction, wait for instructions from a cast member before exiting.
  • If you are indoors, stay away from things that could fall on you. If you are in a store with lots of merchandise (aka mugs, collectibles etc), it is best to get away from things that could cause harm by falling on you. This could also include shelving that could potentially all over.
  • Stay indoors until the shaking stops and it is safe to exit (unless told otherwise by cast members).
  • Stay away from windows.
  • If you are outdoors, find a place that is out in the open if possible. Get away from any buildings, trees, or power lines that might be nearby. Finally, get down.

The Disneyland Resort is one of the safest places on Earth. Disney is prepared for the eventuality that is the next earthquake that will hit Southern California. The cast members of the Disneyland Resort will do everything they can to keep you safe when an earthquake strikes. With that in mind, take heart and know that it is probably one of the safest places to be (in general and beyond earthquakes actually)! However, if you are at the Disneyland Resort when an earthquake does strike, use these tips to help be a part of the solution as Disney strives to keep everyone safe!

We were in DL during the 1st quake & if we hadn’t been on our phones we wouldn’t have known there was a problem except that the cast members politely shut down the rides for “safety inspections”. Everything was so calm & peaceful we just kept enjoying our day as usual. Only felt a slight tremor.
