Disney’s The Lion King Crosses $1 Billion Mark Globally

Disney’s new telling of The Lion King continues to roar at the office. After winning for a second weekend at the box office, it had reached an estimated $999 million worldwide through yesterday. Today, Disney announced that The Lion King will pass the $1 billion mark on the 19th day since it was released. This makes it the second Disney-branded live-action film to reach this level this year. It makes it the sixth to do that in all of Disney after Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, along with the second and fourth Pirates of the Caribbean films.

From all of The Walt Disney Studios, The Lion King is the fourth billion-dollar release in 2019. It joins Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Aladdin in this club. It is also expected that Toy Story 4 will soon reach $1 billion as well. Already a record-breaking year for The Walt Disney Company at the box office, the company will still be releasing Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker later this year.

This continues a trend with Disney having multiple billion-dollar movies released in a single year. In 2018, Disney released three films that reached this mark: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2. The year before Disney released two billion-dollar films, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the live-action Beauty and the Beast.
