Disney’s The Lion King Continues to Reign Atop the Box Office for Second Week

Disney’s The Lion King continued to dominate at the box office this weekend. While it faced some competition from Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood, Disney’s remake of the animated classic roared its way to number one once again.

For its second weekend, The Lion King brought in around $75 million. This was ahead of the runner up Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood, which brought in around $40 million. Domestically, The Lion King now has garnered $350 million and is well on its way to joining the billion-dollar club.

Ahead of the release of The Lion King (and also Aladdin before it), there was much speculation about viewer fatigue over Disney remaking its animated classic. This seemed to be accentuated by Dumbo’s tepid performance earlier this year. However, Aladdin has already joined the billion-dollar club and it is expected that The Lion King will as well.

Internationally, The Lion King also scored the top slot at the box office as well. It brought in approximately $142.8 million.
