Here in California, we are just two months away from the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! As previously announced, the new land will only be opening with one of the two attractions. Of course, Star Wars fans have been waiting more than 40 years to pilot Han Solo’s ship. In Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, we will step into the cockpit and fly through space on a mission. But with over 200 buttons, where do we begin?
When you step inside the ship with five other friends, the pilots will sit in front, with gunners in the middle and flight engineers in the back. Everyone is sure to be overwhelmed with the number of buttons. But don’t worry! “This is an experience that’s all about touching buttons, playing with buttons, it’s highly, highly encouraged,” said Walt Disney Imagineering executive creative director Asa Kalama. Sure, it’s okay to test every button, but we want this mission to be successful! We don’t want to be hunted down in Oga’s Cantina for crashing the ship!
Flight Crew Positions
Push the buttons that flash! Each button will indicate when it should be pushed. The pilot yokes will have lights to indicate which way to fly, whether it be up, down, left or right. The pilot on the left will be in charge of steering the ship left and right. The pilot on the right is responsible for guiding the ship up and down and pulling the throttle to jump to hyperspace.
The gunners in the middle have a very simple, but incredibly important job. Keep firing the blasters! If the gunners don’t shoot down TIE fighters fast enough, the Millennium Falcon will feel the effects. Be sure to keep your ship in one piece!
The flight engineers in the back of the ship play another crucial role. Keep the junk flying through space! The pilots may fly into things, while the gunners get shot at. It’s the engineers’ job to make sure that the ship doesn’t shut down! Warning alarms will be sounding and it is the engineers’ job to make sure everything stays in working order.
This attraction is designed to play out like a video game. Both you and your team have a greater mission and whether the ship makes it or ends in flames, your reputation will follow you. With that being said, make your decisions wisely!
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disneyland Resort on May 31st and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on August 29.
