We are at the end of the countdown of top Disney stories of 2018! And the biggest story of the year was Avengers: Infinity War. Here’s why…
The Big Wait
The biggest movie of the year didn’t start with the movie itself. It had been known that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was building up to this film. Infinity stones had been discovered in other Marvel films. It was a matter of time before we’d have this epic film to culminate a decade of Marvel Studios films. Before the release, there was very little known about what would be contained in the movie. A trailer did not appear until almost the end of 2017. Then, in the first few months before the April release, there were more previews and TV spots. Each contained more and more clues as to what would happen to our favorite heroes.
Fans were rabid after any little preview. There was constant fan artwork speculating what fate would come upon the characters. There was no knowing who would survive and who wouldn’t, but it was clear not everyone would survive.
The Release
In April, Avengers: Infinity War premiered in theaters. It became an instant box office smash and broke records. It was the biggest movie of the year in the world with Black Panther just under it! (Although Black Panther topped it in the domestic market)
Infinity War captured the attention of fans across the globe. Many saw it more than once in the theaters. Immediately after the premiere, there were a great many memes that gave away the significant ending to the movie. This has become a pop culture phenomenon within the already pop culture icons of Marvel movies.
More Wait
With the ending of the film now there has been even more wait for the sequel. Fans pick apart tweets from the Russo brothers looking for clues for the next movie. There has been no title for most of the year. And many YouTube videos bring up theories from the evidence of Infinity War. Thought this is all in reference to a movie to premiere next year, it adds to the Infinity War popularity this year. These videos, tweets, memes, fan art, anything else having to do with the big Avengers film did not happen in one weekend of the movie. Nor did it happen within one month of the movie. This has been going on from its release. Comic-con had many cosplayers paying homage to the characters and events in the feature film. And people still talk about the film now.
It helped to have the home release be in August. Fans that wanted to pause the screen and analyze every second of the movie could do so.
Then, just this last month, there was finally a trailer and title for the next Avengers film. Avengers: Endgame the trailer hit a record number of views. What that shows is that there were so many that followed Infinity War that this was the video they were waiting for after watching Avengers this year. It is a massive hit, and there isn’t any end to it yet.
So Avengers: Infinity War is the biggest thing this year! It topped Star Wars and Disney! It was huge! And the story of 2018 for Disney.
