Internationally Renown Jazz Drummer Steve Houghton Jams with 2018 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band

As the summer continues, more clinicians are performing with the 2018 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. This week, Steve Houghton came to Disneyland to work with, and perform with, the college band. Houghton is a jazz drummer who was in the very first college band in 1973. Since then, he has gone on to become an internationally renowned jazz drummer. He currently is Professor of Percussion and Jazz at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. His career has had him performing with many of the greats in both jazz and classical music. He regularly tours the world both performing and presenting clinics or master classes. While doing all of this, he also has authored over 30 educational books and DVDs.

This week, Steve Houghton joined the 2018 Disneyland All-American College Band as the clinician. After working with the band, they performed in the Royal Theatre. The set was longer than some and jam-packed with awesome music. The set included the following tunes:

  • When You Wish Upon a Star – Introduction of Steve Houghton
  • Dangerous Curves
  • Dragonfly
  • My Man’s Done Gone Now
  • Three Hip Mice
  • Oleo

The concert was a blast to watch. Steve Houghton plays the drums masterfully. He can play complex rhythms and make it look like he is just tapping a pencil against a desk. He truly is a joy to watch. The evening was also fun as he highlighted various members of the band for solos. Altogether, the evening set was a wonderful reminder of just how wonderful this program really is. I can only imagine how awesome it would have been to get to work with someone like Steve Houghton when I was in college.
