John Williams to Compose Score for Star Wars: Episode IX

John Williams will be returning to compose Star Wars: Episode IX. In a recent interview with Variety, Williams confirmed that he and J.J. Abrams have spoken and he will be writing the music to the next movie in the Skywalker Saga. “I would very much like to complete that,” Williams told Variety. John Williams has written all of the music for every Star Wars film except Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The music he has written has permeated pop-culture and the themes he has created are some of the most recognizable of all time. He also is now writing a theme for this year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. John Powell will compose the bulk of the score and incorporate Williams score into it.

The news that John Williams will be scoring this next Skywalker Saga Star Wars film really comes as no surprise. For Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Williams worked with an orchestra 101 musicians and 64-voice Los Angeles Master Chorale. They recorded for 11 days between December 2016 to June 2017. This led to 184 minutes of recorded minutes. The final cut utilized 2 hours and 35 minutes of this.

Throughout his career, John Williams has won 5 Oscars and 23 Grammys. He has been nominated for 50 Acadamy Awards and could potentially get a 51st and 52nd nomination this year for his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Post. In the past, he has also written the memorable scores for Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Home Alone, and Saving Private Ryan to name a few.
