Star Wars and Marvel Movies to Leave Netflix for Disney Streaming Service

This week Disney CEO Bob Iger delivered the news that Netflix most likely did not want to hear. He announced that the Star Wars and Marvel movies in the Disney catalogue will be leaving Netflix for Disney’s new streaming service. This news came during a question and answer session at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media’s communications and entertainment conference. This was held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

“We’ve now decided we will put the Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ movies on this app as well,” Iger said. “It will have the entire output of the studio, animation, live action at Disney, including Pixar, Star Wars and all the Marvel films.”

This comes after news last month that Disney would be developing its own direct-to-consumer streaming service. One service will be for ESPN and the second for other Disney properties. This will include Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars/Lucasfilm. The ESPN service should be available in 2018 with Disney following a year later. The Disney service will also include many TV offerings.

With the initial announcement Iger had then said that Disney and Pixar titles would be moving from Netflix to the new service. The future of Marvel and Star Wars however had been widely speculated about. Now with this announcement, the Disney streaming service will definitely be starting strong. At this point, there has been no price for these services announced.

When they are released, would you subscribe to either of these apps? Do you think they will hurt Netflix? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
