Disney's Live-Action "Pete's Dragon" to Film in New Zealand

Disney’s live-action Pete’s Dragon has begun principal photography in New Zealand. As one of the newest films in the live-action genre, this story will encompass both live-action and CGI. Just like the original Pete’s Dragon, it too will follow the story of young Pete and his Dragon, Elliott, according to a press release from Disney.

Also, the complete list of cast has been confirmed. Starring in the role of Pete is 10-year old Oakes Fegley. Park ranger Grace will be played by Bryce Dallas Howard. The local mill owner, Jack, has been cast as Wes Bently. Playing Jack’s brother, Gavin, is Karl Urban. Oona Laurence as Pete’s best friend Natalie and Robert Redford as Grace’s father.

Pete’s Dragon is scheduled for a theater release in August of 2016. The film is being directed by David Lowery and produced by Jim Whitaker. Whitaker said, “This is a story about how magic can enter one’s life and change the way they see the world. And I think David Lowery is the perfect director to bring this project to life.”

Executive producers of the film Barrie Osborne had this to say on the location, “New Zealand has long been a wonderful partner for film production. Wellington’s state-of-the-art facilities and filmmaker-friendly community, in particular, make it an ideal location to shoot and be based out of.”
