With the recent releases by the BBC of photos for the upcoming Sherlock special (yes, it is still a year away), geeks are now chattering about what is next for Sherlock and where it can/will go. Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock himself, has thrown his own thoughts into the discussion in a recent interview with Vogue.
During a recent interview for his new movie, The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch answered a question about his future with Sherlock.
“If we can keep the quality up,” Cumberbatch told Vogue, “I can’t imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock. I’d love to play him as an old man.”
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star in the hit television series that has filmed quite sporadically through the last couple of years. With a couple of years between season, the show is always highly anticipated. Sherlock will be returning for the holidays in 2015 with a one-off special that appears to feature Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in formal wear (and Watson has a mustache again). This one-off special should also answer the question of what is going on with Moriarty (did you miss him?). The next season of Sherlock will hit TV screens in 2016.
Co-creator Steven Moffat has this to say on the future Sherlock releases: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes—it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”
As with all BBC shows, we currently don’t know when Sherlock will be returning to the USA. It can be expected that it will be shortly after being released in the UK.
