Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two finds Wasteland in trouble again. After a giant earthquake, Mickey Mouse is summoned again to return. Mickey and Oswald team up to rescue Wasteland and apparently the Mad Doctor has reformed himself. Or so he says…
This game has several new things that are being offered. The first being that it is no longer confined to just the Wii and has become multiplatform. Co-op mode is also now available.
Storyline
The storyline for Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is very similar to the original. This time however, the characters are speaking… and singing. However, it is a bit predictable. It isn’t the deepest story in the world but it doesn’t matter.
Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is full of fun Disney references, characters, and homages. This is the ultimate strength of this game. It is a treasure trove of Disney references. The game is worth playing just to geek out to all of the random Disney connections.
The story moves along through narration and projectors, much like the original. The transitions through the projectors is quite a bit different and quite a bit more advanced than the original Epic Mickey.
Playing Epic Mickey
Playing Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two single player follows the story of Mickey Mouse trying to rescue Wasteland. This version feels very much like the first version… but without as much control. The first game felt like there were more decisions that affected the future of the game. At least, that is the impression. It is fun to have Oswald along for the adventure but he isn’t always the most helpful. It would be nice to be able to switch back and fourth between Mickey and Oswald. One major plus for this game is that the issue with the camera has been resolved.
Co-op player has player one playing Mickey Mouse and player two playing Oswald. Each player has specific roles and functions within the game. This really is the best way to play the game. It’s a game best enjoyed playing with friends. The game is played in vertical split screen that took a minute or two to get used to.
Disney fans will like playing co-op mode. Gamers… not so much. It is a lot of fun to work through this world of Disney together with a friend. However, there are some frustrations with how to work together. There are also some issues with knowing how to play certain elements of the game. Directions say what to do but do not define what controls do what at times. The story
Abilities
Mickey returns using his paintbrush. Oswald once again has his remote control but can also fly by spinning his ear. He can also throw his arm as a boomerang. They can also work together to achieve objectives. Sometimes this isn’t the most apparently at how to do this.
Wrap-Up
Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is a fun game for the Disney fan. It is a treasure trove of Disney references. The characters talk in this game which is a huge improvement and hugely entertaining. The co-op mode is a lot more fun than playing alone. Gamers may not be as impressed with this game however. There are some frustrations with the controls. The story isn’t as good as the first one. That being said, it is more Epic Mickey and that is a good thing. It isn’t a revolutionary game but it is fun. One would hope that that reviews are read, lessons are learned, and Warren Spector gives it a third try and maybe… just maybe… the result will be the practically perfect Mickey Mouse and Oswald video game!
