CS Visitors Think Pirates Will Rule 2006

ComingSoon.net asked its visitors last week which movie they think will top the worldwide box office in 2006. It was a close race for first place, but after 11,472 votes, Walt Disney Pictures’ sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest came out on top with 28.5% of the votes. The Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley action-adventure, again helmed by Gore Verbinski, barely defeated director Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, which received 26% of the votes. It’s interesting to note that these two films will be released in theaters just a week apart, with “Superman” flying in on June 30 and “Pirates” sailing in on July 7. We’ll have to see how/if they’ll affect each other’s box office.

20th Century Fox’s X-Men 3 came in at number three with 19.2% of the votes. The Brett Ratner-directed sequel, featuring all the principal cast members from the first two films with some new additions, hits theaters on May 26. A week earlier, on May 19, Columbia Pictures will release Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code, which pulled in 15.5% of the votes in fourth. The adaptation of Dan Brown’s popular novel stars Tom Hanks.

The top five was rounded out by Mission: Impossible: III, from director J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) and starring Tom Cruise. The third installment received 2.3% of the votes and kicks-off the summer on May 5.

Visitors also had the option of picking “other film not listed,” which got 1.9% of the votes. Also on the list were Eragon (1.6%, Dec. 15), Casino Royale (1.5%, Nov. 17), Cars (1.4%, Jun. 9), Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (1.2%, Mar. 31), Lady in the Water (0.5%, Jul. 21) and Poseidon (0.4%, May 12).

While the list of options provided to our visitors was most certainly not all-inclusive, perhaps this will give us an idea of how the year will turn out.
