Growing up in the closing decades of the 20th century, I watched lots of Disney cartoons. Nowadays, we have fantastic original shows like Phineas and Ferb, Fish Hooks, and Gravity Falls. These shows are completely driven and written by the show creator and their gang of writers, allowing them to come up with the wackiest ideas they can conceive. Back when, Disney cartoons were spun-off from old Disney titles. The company had these characters in their libraries and wanted to do something with them, so naturally, a weekly television show was the best way to keep these guys alive. A cartoon block called The Disney Afternoon did this so effectively and was a major part of our childhood.
DuckTales, TaleSpin, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop – these shows were some of the most famous shows back in the 80s and 90s (DuckTales especially). They benefited from children coming home after school and turning on the TV to see their favorite Disney characters. The block that held all these shows, The Disney Afternoon, had an extremely catchy opener and when people heard those first few notes, they knew the next two hours were going to be a riot.
The song is really catchy, but very much a product of its time. It had all the cheesiness of the 90s; it sounded a bit like the DuckTales theme song with a lot of cute drum beats. And because the characters were also from 80s cartoon shows, they wore Hawaiian shirts, and massive sweaters. However, it is very nostalgic and is sure to bring up lots of fond memories of sitting in front of a 4:3 TV screen, getting ready to watch cartoons….on broadcast television!
Take a gander!
