Alice in Wonderland

Climb on board your friendly “caterpillar” tour guide as you follow Alice down the White Rabbit’s hole and arrive in Wonderland where a world of adventure awaits.

Three years following the opening of Disneyland, Walt created an attraction version of Alice in Wonderland, which opened on June 14, 1958. The original attraction included visits to the Upside Down Room, a garden of oversized flowers, and the court of the Queen of Hearts.

Alice in Wonderland

In April of 1984, a completely remodeled and expanded version of Alice in Wonderland opened. The comical caterpillar vehicles remained, however the inside of the attraction changed by adding emphasis on modern-day special effects. The tea party scene was moved to the end of the attraction and the “Upside Room” was removed altogether. Also updated with this version of the attraction was the musical soundtrack. Songs such as “I’m Late”, “The Unbirthday Song”, “March of the Cards” and “Painting the Roses Red” were added to their corresponding scenes, thus making the attraction what it is today.

Additional Trivia and Fun Facts

  • For the sake of authenticity, Kathryn Beaumont, the original speaking and singing voice of Alice from the film, provided Alice’s voice in the remake attraction.

Alice in Wonderland

  • The Alice in Wonderland attraction is built on the second floor of the building that houses Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, hence the hill at the begging and end of the attraction.

Alice in Wonderland

  • The caterpillar cars have six different color patters: all green, green/blue-green, all pink, pink/purple, all yellow, and yellow/orange.
  • Having two attractions based on the same film is unusual, especially since the general reception of the film was a negative one. Walt Disney himself once said he regretted making it because it lacked a connection to the audience’s hearts.

Alice in Wonderland

  • Alice in Wonderland is the only Fantasyland attraction that was built between park opening and the redesign of Fantasyland in 1983.
  • Due to the slippery surface to a short stretch of track, Alice in Wonderland is one of the few Disneyland attractions to close when it rains.
