Star Trek: Picard – The Ships of the Fleet Museum

In The Bounty on Star Trek: Picard, Admiral Picard leads the skeleton crew of the USS Titan-A to Athan Prime where the Fleet Museum orbits the planet. This museum is actually the old Spacedock that will be quite familiar to Star Trek fans.

This Article Has Been Updated With New Information From Dave Blass!

The old Spacedock was seen in some of the movies with Admiral/Captain Kirk and crew. One of the most memorable moments is when Kirk, Scotty, Chekov, and McCoy steal the Enterprise from Spacedock and the Excelsior, under the command of Captain Styles, attempts to pursue. Of course, Scotty has already made sure the Excelsior and its trans warp drive will not be able to pursue their escape and the rest goes down in history.

The old Spacedock isn’t the only piece of history to be found at the Fleet Museum. Around the outside of the Spacedock, historic ships can be seen berthed in docking rings. There are some very recognizable ships and some not so recognizable. Below is a look at the ships of the Fleet Museum which commanded by Commodore Georgi LaForge.

Dave Blass shared on Twitter a top-view look at the Fleet Museum that helps showcase the ships found at the old Spacedock.

Here are the main ships seen at the Starfleet Museum as seen in The Bounty on Star Trek: Picard:

USS Defiant

Star Trek fans will recognize the Defiant from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The Defiant was a prototype warship that was sent to Deep Space Nine to fight in the Dominion War. The original Defiant NX-74205 was destroyed during the Dominion War in season 7 of the series. It was replaced by the identical USS São Paulo that was renamed to also be the Defiant NCC-75633. During its time at Deep Space Nine, it was commanded by Captain Benjamin Sisko. Later, Worf commanded the Defiant as it fought against the Borg in Star Trek: First Contact. Most recently it was seen in Star Trek: Prodigy during its season 1 finale Supernova. A Constitution Class ship of the same name was first seen in Star Trek: The Original Series and then later in the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Enterprise.

USS New Jersey

There isn’t much known about the USS New Jersey NCC-1975. This is the first time that it appears in Star Trek. It is a Constitution Class starship and its name and registry are a reference to Star Trek: Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas who was born in New Jersey in 1975.

USS Enterprise-A

The USS Enterprise NCC 1701-A is also seen at the Fleet Museum. This is the ship that was captained by Captain Kirk that was first seen after Kirk and company rescued Earth from a probe that was seeking out the extinct Humpback Whales (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). This ship would spend its career under the command of Kirk and was last seen battling General Chang and his Klingon Bird of Prey that could fire while cloaked in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Shortly after the events that took place on Khitomer and the peace treaty that was signed, thanks to the effort of Captain Kirk and his crew with the assistance of Captain Sulu and the crew of the Excelsior, the USS Enterprise-A was decommissioned. It now can be found at the Fleet Museum.

This Enterprise was the second ship to bear this name that Kirk commanded. The original was seen in Star Trek: The Original Series. After undergoing a refit, it was seen in the first three Star Trek movies. It was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

USS Voyager

The USS Voyager NCC-74656 is an Intrepid Class starship that was under the command of Captain Janeway, who now is an Admiral by the time of the events of Star Trek: Picard. In this episode, Seven of Nine says to Jack Crusher, “The USS Voyager. She made her name farther out than…any of those other relics had ever gone. I was reborn there. She was my home. Her crew were my family.” This was the first ship in Starfleet to explore the Delta Quadrant, even if that wasn’t the intended mission. It spent seven years trying to return from its unexpected trip to the Delta Quadrant to Federation Space. Along the way, it continued the mission of Starfleet exploration. It also had a mixed crew after the events that sent it to the Delta Quadrant left two crews with one ship and not a full crew. In the Delta Quadrant, Voyager added to its crew. This included a guide named Neelix and eventually a former Borg named Seven of Nine.

HMS Bounty

The HMS Bounty was the Klingon Bird of Prey that is a B’rel-class ship. This ship first appeared during the events of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Admiral Kirk stole it and then used it to return Spock to Vulcan where is Katra was reunited with his body. The ship was then used to return to Earth, albeit with a brief detour through time and to pick up some whales to save the planet, before being crashed into San Francisco Bay. It then sank to the bottom of the ocean before being recovered eventually and then brought to the Fleet Museum.

USS Enterprise NX-01

The Enterprise NX-01 is the refit of the original starship named Enterprise. This ship was originally commanded by Captain Archer. It was the first of its kind and the first Earth vessel with a Warp 5 capable warp engine. It played an important role in promoting United Earth’s role in interstellar politics and helped lay the foundation for the United Federation of Planets.

USS Excelsior

The USS Excelsior NCC-2000 is found during the episode The Bounty and also in the Fleet Museum manifest during the credits of Star Trek: Picard. This ship was the first of its class, it was known as the “great experiment.” This was because it was to have been the first ship in Starfleet with a TransWarp drive. However, Scotty sabotaged the drive in order to help the Enterprise under the command of Admiral Kirk escape to return to Genesis to get Spock’s body and reunite it with its Katra on Vulcan. Eventually, the Excelsior would be commanded by Captain Sulu. It would go on a three-year mission cataloguing gaseous anomalies before monitoring the destruction of Praxis. It would then go on to aid the Enterprise-A in a battle against a rogue Klingon Bird of Prey commanded by General Chang. By aiding the Enterprise in destroying the Bird of Prey, the Excelsior helped lead the Klingons and Federation into an era of peace.

USS Stargazer

It is only appropriate that the USS Stargazer NCC-2893 would appear at the Fleet Museum in a series that focuses on Jean-Luc Picard. Picard served as a bridge officer on the ship. After the captain was killed, Picard took command of the vessel and situation. He handled things so well that Starfleet made him the permanent captain. He continued to command the Stargazer for 22 years.

Kronos One

Chancellor Gorkon’s ship, Kronos One is the Klingon K’t’inga-class Battlecruiser that is seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The ship was fired upon with two photo torpedoes that disabled it. Then two assassins boarded the ship and killed crew members and also Chancellor Gorkon.

While these are the most notable ships seen at the Fleet Museum. There were multiple other ships that could be briefly seen docked at the old Spacedock. Presumably, more are also docked inside the Spacedock as well. From what could be seen during The Bounty, it appeared that the following other ships could be seen as well at the Fleet Museum. Many of these were confirmed by Blass:

USS Sentinel

The USS Sentinel NCC-68455 was an Akira-class starship that was seen in Deep Space 9. This ship had an extra graviton stabilizer which Nog orchestrated a complicated trade that brought the graviton stabilizer to the USS Defiant and a phaser emitter to the Sentinel from the USS Musashi.

USS Saratoga

This version of the USS Saratoga is a salvaged ship that was restored for the display at Fleet Museum. It is seen as USS Saratoga NCC-31911 which was destroyed by the Borg at Wolf 359. However, it features the USS Saratoga NCC-1887. The ship has restored elements of both eras of Miranda class starships.

USS Lexington

The USS Lexington NCC-30405 was commanded at one point by Captain Wil Thoms. It is a Nebula class starship. In 2365 it was on a mission of planetary exploration. It would later be sent on an interstellar charting mission. In 2373 it fought against the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001 (as seen in Star Trek: First Contact) before it was retired and then sent to the Fleet Museum.

USS Argo

The USS Argo NCC-61357 is a Sabre class starship. This ship is on the lower ring of the Fleet Museum.

USS Pioneer

The USS Pioneer NCC-1500 is a Pioneer class starship found at the Fleet Museum. According to Dave Blass, the ship is undergoing repairs.

Romulan Bird of Prey

Also on display at the Fleet Museum is a Romulan Bird of Prey. This is much like is seen in Star Trek: The Original Series when the world first saw Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise face off against the Romulans. This kind of ship was in the military service of the Romulan Star Empire during the 23rd century. Some of these ships continued to be used into the 24th century.

USS Wersching

The USS Wersching NCC-63328 is an Akira class starship that was on display at the Fleet Museum in the place normally occupied by the USS Pioneer. This information was shared by Dave Blass.

USS Titan

Technically not on display, the USS Titan NCC-80102 can be found at the Fleet Museum during the Star Trek: Picard episode The Bounty. It moors at the old Spacedock while Admiral Picard attempts to enlist Commodore Geordi LaForge’s help against Captain Vadic and the Changeling threat. Obviously, this is the only ship that is no longer at the Fleet Museum as the episode ends. However, after the events of season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, it is very possible that the Titan will end up at the Fleet Museum someday.

Bought back a lot of memories
Great to see the old ships
    And characters exellent episode

    1. Completely agreed! I am definitely partial to Enterprise-A. Which one was your favorite?

  2. I was watching “Relics” the Next Gener. With Scotty and Picard tells him there is a Constitution Class Starship in the Fleet Museum.

    1. I love that episode! I was thinking about it while watching this one!

    2. That was the Enterprise-A that Scotty mentioned. He mentioned it when Riker said “USS Enterprise” and Scotty beamed and said “Oh Jim Kirk got it out of mothballs, did he?!”

When you watch EP9: VOX, you’ll be thinking of that quote for a while, since I’m not gonna spoil it for you, but Geordi had been hiding something in Hanger #12 for twenty plus years.

      1. He’s not referring to that one. Scotty is now canonically referring to the USS New Jersey.

Some times treated with derision but we are DS9 fans so Defiant is our ride. Our cats are named Benji and Kasidy.

I do like how percard paid homage to the ships through to Star Trek series that was something that very few think about

The U.s.s. excelsior is literally at the top right infront of the Akira class.

  6. Seeing the Enterprise-A was the highlight for me. Constitution refit is an all time classic design that for me has never been matched. I can’t help wonder what ships would be house INSIDE the Spacedock. So many possibilities.

It’s just like the Mothball Fleet that
the US Navy has. When Ships are Decommissioned they go into Standby Status, still able to get underway in case they are ever recalled into Active Service.

I wonder if these Starfleet Vessels are able to do the same. Maybe that’s why LaForge is in charge of them.

Enterprise NCC-1701-A for me, the ONLY Enterprise that was under the exclusive command of Captain Kirk.

  9. Enterprise A is a lovely looking ship. It went onto to be crewed by another crew after Kirk. Kirk said at the end of Star Trek VI. The crew was to be decommissioned. Kirk states that “this ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew”. Would like to know more about those voyages between end of VI and Generations.

I hope we see more from the fleet museum and whats in Hangar bay 12????

What about that special star ship that was about four times the size of the enterprise and much faster with a lot more firepower.

Sad to see the old space dock decommissioned. What did they replace it with?

  13. How did they move the Spacedock?!?

    1. Spacedock seems to have a LOT more strength and ability than anyone ever gave it credit for!

I certainly would love to see Enterprise-C and Enterprise-E at the fleet museum. Enterprise-D is on diplay. Hopefully, USS Galaxy and USS Ambassador will be at the museum someday.

    1. Uh, the C and E were both destroyed. Totally.

      1. Dan Carter Avatar
        Dan Carter

According to the Next Generations show runners, the Enterprise-C was captured. Not destroyed. The ship would make for a good plot twist.

In devising the role, Crosby stated, “the part of Sela sort of came about from me sitting around in my house one day thinking about how much fun it was for me to go back and do “Yesterday’s Enterprise“, and it was so much fun that I thought what else can I do? I thought it was pretty well established that Lt. Yar and Lt. Castillo on “Yesterday’s Enterprise” had something going so perhaps they had a child or Yar was pregnant when she went back into the past to fight her final battle. And I sort of thought it out and it seemed to really make sense, and there were no flaws.
So my original intention was that Lt. Yar would have a daughter that was raised by Romulans and would grow up to try to actually be a Romulan. So I brought this up and the producers really liked the idea and they sort of toyed with it for a while. A few months went by and I got a call and they said we like your idea but we just can’t make sense of that Lt. Yar got pregnant by Castillo. We’ll have it so that Yar was captured, they didn’t all die in the battle, the ship was captured and she was taken by a Romulan general.” (Trek: The Next Generation Crew Book [page number? • edit])

    2. Well, you’ll have to ask Worf why the E can’t be put on display.

They forget to add a Ambassador Class star ship to the Fleet Museum. A ship like Enterprise C would be a huge statement. Imagine the ship being tied to Sela’s existance, as well as the notion that Enterprise C was her flagship responsible for the fall of the Romulan Star Empire?
