What Could an Avengers: Infinity War Sequel Look Like?

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now!  Perhaps you’ve seen it, perhaps not.  If you have seen it, read on.  If you haven’t, please do not read further.  It’s going to ruin things for you and that won’t be fun.

If you’re ready, let’s go!

The End is the Beginning

The end of Infinity War is a big cliffhanger, that also leaves our heroes devastated.  How are they going to fix things now?  Has Thanos truly won?  Well, I think there are some clues to where the next movie will go.  The problem is that the movie has taken from two major comics storylines involving Thanos and the word Infinity.  So, let’s see how things can go if it follows either one…

Infinity Gauntlet

Infinity Gauntlet is a major story crossover from back in the 90’s.  Thanos has accumulated the Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe as a tribute to his lady love, Death.  The references in the movie that seem to point to this story aren’t as prevalent even though it seems to follow it with Thanos’ motivation of genocide.

One is Doctor Strange’s grabbing heroes to team up with.  He’s the main organizer in the storyline, but fails too.  Another clue is found in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  In a post-credits scene we are introduced to Adam Warlock…but in a cocoon.  Adam Warlock is the hero of the Infinity Gauntlet comic.  Vol. 2 takes place quite a bit before Infinity War.  I think it’s possible to see Warlock in the next film.

The other possibly telling clue is having Nebula survive Thanos’ snap of the fingers.  In Infinity Gauntlet comics, she is the one who eventually wrestles the Gauntlet from Thanos and restores things back to how they were.  This may be her fate in the next film.

If the movie goes the Infinity Gauntlet route, it could also mean that heroes are trapped inside the Soul Stone instead of being totally lost.  It’s what happens in the comic and they are released in time to stop Thanos completely and set things right.  There could be a similar result in part two.

These are the major tells of Infinity War and there’s a more recent storyline that the movie pulls from…

Infinity

There’s a more recent Infinity crossover event in Marvel Comics (yeah, just called Infinity) that has Thanos as the main villain.  What’s interesting is that the Infinity War movie pulls more from this.

The Black Order are featured in this story.  They even invade Wakanda to try to grab an Infinity Stone.  The weird looking, multi-armed aliens are also the army in the Infinity crossover.  Ebony Maw tortures Doctor Strange in the comics and the movie.  Galactic heroes greatly help with the battles, including Rocket Raccoon, Star Lord, and Groot.  These heroes weren’t present in the Infinity Gauntlet story.

The other corresponding clues come from other films.  The result of Infinity is where Terrigen Mist is released to the earth to transform people into Inhumans.  We’ve already seen that in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Then there’s the Kree helping to defeat Thanos and led by Thor.  This possible clue we sort of see in the post-credits scene, but it has more to do with an upcoming movie.  So, take this as speculation clue-wise.

In the post-credits scene we see Nick Fury contact Captain Marvel via a special communicator.  This means she can’t be contacted by easy means or it’s in emergency ways.  Where is she?  My guess is in outer space.  What is she doing there?  Probably helping the Kree or some other alien race battle Skrulls.  We’ve seen the Kree a lot in Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  They are supposed to be in the upcoming Captain Marvel film.  With her being contacted and having a connection to the aliens I think that she’ll bring an army to help fight Thanos.

Lastly, with the Inhumans and Terrigen Mist being in the mix of the comics, a clue might be in the pulled movie Inhumans.  Marvel Studios was going to have the movie in between the Infinity War films.  Because of that, I doubt the Inhumans are going to be involved, but it could be a bit of a direction still.

If the Infinity War sequel still follows Infinity, we may see Thanos’ son as the hero.  It’s a bit of a stretch since he was the motivating factor of the comics and we’ve had no reference of him in the movie.  But, it means there could be another similar character coming in.

Combo

It’s very possible we’ll still get a combo of the two stories.  My guess is Kree army with Nebula getting the Gauntlet.  I think Warlock will come into play as well since we’ve had that reference and there doesn’t seem to be indication of him in Vol. 3.

But, the film could go in a completely different direction.  What do you think?  What will happen in the sequel to Infinity War?  Let us know in the comments below!
