Guardians Breakout of Tower – Top 5 Disney Stories of 2016 – #3

The third of the top 5 stories of 2016 in terms of Disney news had a surprising impact on the Disney community.  And not all in a happy way.

At the San Diego Comic Con Marvel and Disney announced that Guardians of the Galaxy would take over the theme of the Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure.  The new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout is set to open in May of 2017.  The attraction rethemes the building as well as sets up a brand new story.

It would seem to be a great match.  Take a hit, popular movie with great characters and put it in a fun, favorite attraction.  But, there was some backlash from the Disney community.  The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror has been a mainstay in Disney Parks fans from the 90’s when it opened at Walt Disney World.  Having it at the Disneyland Resort made it even more popular.  So, seemingly replacing it has created some controversy.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT!As the year draws to a close, so does the Tower of Terror.  DCA has initiated some farewell events and items of commemoration.  The Late Check Out mode started around Halloween.  Final Check Out merchandise started to become available for collectors.

Though it’s on its way out, the new attraction with a Marvel theme looks to be another hit.  A little of it’s look has been revealed, but there is still more to come, probably in 2017.  Though controversial, it’s not a terrible thing to be done.  It’s also nice that Disney is giving a chance to ride the Tower in a unique way before it’s gone.

For now, enjoy our coverage of the end of Tower of Terror and the beginnings of Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout, including a video of the Late Check Out version of the Tower of Terror.
