Day Two of Star Wars Celebration Europe has been a day full of fun announcements and surprises! The focus was today more on television and virtual reality. While there weren’t any big traditional movie announcements, there was an announcement of a different type of movie that is in the works. It could be very exciting!
Star Wars Rebels Season Three Reveals Grand Admiral Thrawn
Star Wars Rebels has a lot coming to season three. Yesterday, it was announced that Ahsoka Tano would be returning in some form or another. Today there were quite a few more reveals, including the trailer for this coming season.
Ezra has a haircut and with the haircut comes a new, not so good, attitude. This will probably lead to problems.
Maul will be making what appears to be a rather significant return. It looks like he will be pursuing his agenda and that will lead to greater involvement with Ezra and the now-blinded Kanan. Maul seems to be looking for his place in the universe and wants to use Ezra to achieve his goals. He also appears to not care for Kanan.
The Bendu is a new character on the show that is a character who will take the center path of the Force.
Wedge Antilles will be appearing as a Tie Fighter pilot that will unsurprisingly defect to the Rebellion.
It appears that there will also be more Mandalorians in this season as well.
Perhaps the most exciting reveal for this season is the addition of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fans of the Heir to the Empire books are already quite aware of this Imperial officer but soon he will become a major threat to the budding Rebellion in this season of Star Wars Rebels. This will be the first time that Thrawn is considered canon. It will be fascinating to see what this does to not only the plot of Star Wars Rebels, but also the bigger Star Wars universe. Thrawn will be voiced by Lars Mikkelsen with the blessing of Timothy Zahn, who happens to be working on a new novel entitled Thrawn that is due out in 2017.
Finally, Filoni did confirm that the Star Wars Rebels team knows what will happen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and that information will be used for the Rebels storyline.
VR Movie with Darth Vader
Industrial Light & Magic’s virtual reality arm xLab is creating a virtual reality movie that will focus on Darth Vader. This VR movie is being written by David S. Goyer who took to the stage to share about this new project and how they landed on Darth Vader.
“When we looked at all the characters, places, and worlds in the Star Wars universe available to us, we asked ourselves, ‘What haven’t we seen before? Who are we curious about?” Goyer went on, “Darth Vader is the perfect ambassador to usher us into theStar Wars VR universe.”
Goyer described this VR movie saying, “You are the visitor in this story that is happening in and around you, and to a certain extent you might even have some effect on.” He continued, “You can pick up things, you can open things. You can push things, you can walk. You can touch characters.”
It will continue on day and night, even if you aren’t playing. Things will also continue and cycle even after the story has been completed for the first time by the player.
“The difference between cinema and television and VR — particularly with the fidelity that [the xLab] team is working on, is that you really feel like you there. The sense of presence isn’t just a buzzword,” Goyer said. “And it’s surprisingly very emotional. It can make you sad, and make you lean in, and make you feel for a character in a way you haven’t before. In a way that you can’t really do in any other medium. And it can scare you.”
Trials on Tatooine
In Trials on Tatooine, players will get to become Luke Skywalker’s apprentice shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi. It will be a virtual reality experience and free to those who own HTC Vive on July 18, 2016. It sounds like this VR “game” will be incredibly immersive and could lead to future experiences for fans of Star Wars. It appears that this won’t be like a traditional game and instead a storytelling experience that really could take VR to the next level.
Star Wars Battlefront Expansion
The final expansion for Star Wars Battlefront will take place during the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the expansion, players will be able to visit the planet Scarif. There will be the option to play as either Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), or Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Krennic. This expansion will come after the third which will give players the option to be Chewbacca or the Bounty Hunter Bossk and center around Death Star.
Anthony Daniels Without Protocol Panel
Warwick Davis hosted Anthony Daniels during this always popular panel. Throughout the panel Anthony Daniels (wearing a gold jacket with red sleeve) shared his unique perspective of the Star Wars galaxy as he has played C-3P0. With the addition of Davis, an already entertaining panel got even more so with the bantering that happened between the two of them.
Mark Hamill Impromptu Talk
Mark Hamill continued to be awesome by having an impromptu talk with fans at Star Wars Celebration. For those who were there, they got to hear him share about Star Wars: A New Hope. He also answered the question on if he purposely or accidentally said “Carrie” at the end of the movie… but you had to be there for that.
Star Wars Celebration Europe continues to be the hottest place in the galaxy for Star Wars fans! Next year, it will be occurring in Orlando, Florida. Will you be there? Continue to check back on our Star Wars Celebration page for updates throughout the weekend and may the Force be with you!
