Walt Disney Studios Confirms Live-Action ‘The Jungle Book’ & ‘Maleficent’ Sequels, PLUS More

With the recent surge of live-action Disney films and their proven success (The Jungle Book), Variety reports the company isn’t going to stop anytime soon. On Monday, the site confirmed a few new projects as well as the projected dates for those said projects.

As noted a while back, it was stated that a 101 Dalmatian film, based off the character Cruella, was to be produced. The project has since been green lit and it will in fact feature Emma Stone. Other projects confirmed by Variety include a second The Jungle Book and Maleficent.

Aside from sequels, the company plans to produce a handful of other live-action films.

The company also confirmed that it is moving forward with Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” with director Lasse Hallstrom (“My Life as a Dog”) and writer Ashleigh Powell attached; a Tinker Bell project with Reese Witherspoon set to star and Victoria Strouse (“Finding Dory”) writing; “Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne Johnson set to star and John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (“Focus”) writing; and “Dumbo” with director Tim Burton and writer Ehren Kruger (“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”) overseeing the elephant tale.

In addition, Disney said it is planning a sequel to “Mary Poppins” with Emily Blunt and “Hamilton” creator Lin Manuel-Miranda starring and Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) directing. Given that these films are still in various stages of planning, it is possible that certain projects could fall out.

With that in mind, proposed dates for these said projects include:

UNTITLED DISNEY FAIRY TALE (Live Action) previously dated on 12/22/17 moves up to 7/28/17
UNTITLED DISNEY FAIRY TALE (Live Action) now dated on 4/6/18
UNTITLED DISNEY LIVE ACTION now dated on 8/3/18
UNTITLED DISNEY LIVE ACTION now dated on 12/25/18
UNTITLED DISNEY FAIRY TALE (Live Action) now dated on 12/20/19

As Disney shared their future lineup, it shows the company is ready for competition with other films including Sony’s Jumanji and Spider-Man, in the coming years.

Stay tuned for more details on these projects as they break. Do you think live-action films are the way to go for the Walt Disney Company?
