Though the story itself was released in 1955, work for the film began in 1937. According to a D23 article, the story concept was created after Walt Disney purchased the story from Ward Greene. Greene worked for King Features Syndicate, which was the company that distributed Disney comic strips.

“The film missed its original target date, in part because it was being animated in the widescreen Cinemascope process, which took so much more time than the standard-format animations that it doubled the cost of the backgrounds. Animators had to work-six-day weeks down the stretch… but when it was released it was another Disney success,” said Neal Gabler, author of “Walt Disney: Triumph of the American Imagination.”

As for the production itself, animators sketched and drew a variety of animals and breeds. According to Movie Fone, some of the animators even brought their own dogs into work and used them as models.

If you are feeling a bit nostalgic, Spotify has the film’s soundtrack available to stream.

Movie Fone also has a list of 19 facts from the film, feel free to check them out here.
