Disney Magic Loses Power at Sea

The Disney Magic at Sea

Guests aboard the Disney Magic yesterday experienced a different type of adventure than they were expecting. The Disney Magic lost power North of Cuba before resuming its journey shortly after.

At around 5:00 pm Pete Werner posted this on facebook:

Disney Magic is dead in the water on our way to Cozumel. Huge puff of black smoke seen from the front of the ship followed by power failure.

This was followed by this post approximately 45 minutes later:

We’re moving again. Thank god!

Other posts on social media confirmed the incident was a brief hiccup in this Disney cruise as shows, meals, and events still went forward during the evening.

DAPs Magic reached out to the Disney Cruise Line and was supplied with the following information on the incident:

The Disney Magic very briefly lost power last night, and it was restored within minutes.   The ship is designed with redundancies including emergency lighting, which came on immediately.

We do not know what caused the brief power loss and are looking into it.

While perhaps unnerving for some cruise guests, this appears to be a minor incident that did not appear to put the guests or crew of the Disney Magic in any safety risk.

The Disney Magic is currently taking guests on a seven night cruise through the Western Caribbean with port stops in Cozumel, Mexico; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Falmouth, Jamaica; and the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas Castaway Cay.

This ship made its maiden voyage in 1998 and in 2013 went through a major refurbishment. It was the first ship of the Disney Cruise Line fleet and can carry 2,713 passengers along with 950 crew. It is 984 feet long, 106 feet wide, and 171.5 feet tall. While aboard guests can experience the grandeur of a luxury cruise and the whimsy of Disney magic as they experience fantastic dining, entertainment and also get to meet Disney, Disney-Pixar, and Marvel friends. The Disney Cruise Line launched in 1998 with one ship and now has a fleet of four cruise ships.

I was on this cruise and the posts made this get blown way out of proportion…everything was fine and it did not last long! Would sail Disney again now if I could…wish I didn’t have to get off the ship!

Glad to hear! 🙂 It’s hard to know when we are thousands of miles away. It looked like Disney did a fantastic job handling the whole thing. Glad to hear you had a fantastic cruise! It’s definitely on my bucket list.
