Directors Dance Continues at Marvel Studios

New movies and new directors keep coming from Marvel Studios. So far, their record has been quite impressive. Consider this: three of the biggest movies that pop into my mind from this year focus on Marvel characters. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past all have been quite successful this year. While not all produced at home, the Marvel brand continues to be a well oiled machine.

One squeak in this well oiled machine has been who will direct Ant-Man. After the departure of Edgar Wright from the director’s chair over creative differences, Ant-Man has suddenly gained a level of general interest that perhaps wouldn’t be seen if this complication hadn’t arisen. The inevitable questions about who is right in regards to the story are being asked. Other questions are popping up on if Ant-Man should be postponed*. At this point, the Hollywood Reporter has said that Adam McKay, Ruben Fleischer and Rawson Thurber have all met with studio execs to potentially sit in the director’s chair. Seeing that these are all rumors currently, only time will tell as to what actually happens.

Another movie that has been in Kevin Feige’s sights for quite some time has been Doctor Strange. Multiple sources are reporting that Scott Derrickson has been tapped to direct this movie and an official announcement should be coming soon. Dr. Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme who battles to protect earth from magical and mystical threats.

In January of 2013 Kevin Feige indicated that Doctor Strange would be included in Marvel’s “Phase Three” rollout of movies. Feige also indicated that this would be opening the door to more supernatural films from the Marvel Studios. Currently the cast and release dates have not been set for Doctor Strange. Look towards 2017 or 2018 though for this movie to hit the big screens.

What do you think of these developments? Are you excited about a Dr. Strange flick? Who would you like to see in the title role?

Make it a GREAT day!

*I contend that it should not be postponed if at all possible. Seeing that Marvel has movies and a big picture for these movies planned for through 2028, it seems like changing a schedule for a movie could change the over-arching storyline for the Marvel films. Conversely, I’d like to think that Marvel had thought about potential complications like this but this could be that one decimal point that is in the wrong place in their grand equation. Either way, I think it’d be wise to stick with the plan because so far… it has been awesome.
