Disney Closing Virtual World Games

Disney Closing Virtual World Games

Come September 19, Disney Interactive Media Group will be closing Toontown Online, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and Pixie Hollow.  Toontown Online was named 2003’s MMORPG of the year. It also earned a Parent’s Choice Foundation award. Times have changed though and these games have run their course. Though initially fairly successful, they no longer garner the same attention or traffic that the once could. It also should be noticed, Disney has made a fundamental shift in its game creation strategy. They are moving to a licensing driven model rather than an in-house development model.

September 19 will see the closure of the Disney Virtual Worlds. Paying subscribers will be issued refunds and await what comes next from the world of Disney games.

The following was posted on the Toontown Online website:

  1. While Disney and Disney Interactive does seek to eliminate the high risks associated in basing multiple games upon the short-term successes and popularity of corresponding movies or character, the point to be made is that Disney could have enriched these properties it had at its disposal without turning its back entirely upon such games and the corresponding (player) “communities” whom voices and legitimate concerns were in essence, blatantly ignored.

For example, players loyal to the game “Pirates of the Caribbean Online” (POTCO) maintained an ongoing petition movement for over a year which involved the gain of some 3,000 signatures from players whom had voiced their legitimate concern about the game and the status it was allowed to be kept.

To date (in the shadow of this report), no hint of acknowledgement of such concerns were ever received by the POTCO community from an official representative of Disney or Disney Interactive.
