Watcher Wednesday: Guardians of the Galaxy Update

Happy Day Before Independence Day!  What better way to kick off the great American holiday than with something about intergalactic battles?  (Yes, international fans, I do mean this as a joke)

It was recently confirmed that Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon will all be appearing in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film.  What does this mean in terms of plot and interaction with other Marvel films?

Well, first, it does look like the movie will take the more recent approach to the comic series.  In the comics, Star Lord gathers galactic heroes to face threats to the universe overall.  Star Lord’s alter ego is none other than Peter Quill.

Among his merry band of hero brethren are Rocket Raccoon and Groot, who are appearing in the feature film as well.  Raccoon has been more and more of a growing favorite as he also appears in the recent Marvel vs. Capcom game.

The other two characters in tow mean something a little different to me for this movie.  Drax and Gamora have appeared on the team many times in the comics, but they also appeared in another series and team that was dubbed the Infinity Watch.  Each member of this team was the guardian of an Infinite Gem.

What does this matter to the Marvel movie universe?  Well, the bad guy trying to get his hands on the Infinite Gems was Thanos.  Thanos is the speculated enemy at the end of the Avengers movie, appearing during the credits.  It’s also speculated that the Infintiy Gauntlet – the one way to hold all of the gems together – had an appearance in the first Thor film.  Put it all together and it does appear that the Avengers will probably be facing an enemy of infinite proportion.

But, back to the Guardians film.  The other exciting thing about what the roster shows is that it fits with the current redoing of the Marvel Comics series.  Iron Man is a now a member of the Guardians in the comics, and having it in the film franchise makes it seem that there could be reference to this new development.

Overall, it makes me more and more excited to see this film be made.  And until next time, have a Marvel-ous day!
