Safety Prompts Ride Closures at Disneyland Over Weekend

Many guests visiting the Disneyland Resort over the weekend observed the closure of Space Mountain and the Matterhorn Mountain in Disneyland along with Soarin’ over California in Disney California Adventure. The internet soon was buzzing with rumors that the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) had shut these attractions down.  By Sunday, the Matterhorn had reopened by Space Mountain and Soarin’ Over California remained out of operation.

On Friday, 6 citations from Cal/OSHA were delivered to the Disneyland Resort. The primary focus of these citations were on the safety of the cast members at the Disneyland Resort. Disneyland Resort spokesperson Suzi Brown said, “We have received notification of the citations and are working with OSHA to fully review them.

Due to this review process, attractions were temporarily closed. “We constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors — and we are reviewing certain protocols.

The closures were voluntary by the Disneyland Resort and at no time guests were at any safety risk. If nothing had been done, Disneyland could face up to $234,850.00 in fines, according to the citations posted on the Cal/OSH website.  The violations ranged in severity and had different fines.

Safety has been of great importance to the Walt Disney Company since the 1950s and its programs to ensure the safety of guests and cast members alike can be found at disney.com/safety.
