Autopsy performed on runner who collapsed

Preliminary autopsy results might be released today on the man who collapsed after crossing the finish line at the Walt Disney World Half-Marathon on Saturday.

The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy Sunday but would not release any information about what may have killed the 43-year-old golf pro from Arizona.

Willie Kane of Tucson ran the course in about 2.5 hours, ahead of at least half of the 11,761 competitors.

Paramedics arrived seconds after he fell to the ground and rushed Kane to Florida Hospital Celebration Health, where he was pronounced dead.

Kane began running four years ago out of concern for his health, said Mike Hayes, assistant director of the golf course where Kane worked. He said Kane’s father also died at an early age, and Kane, who is divorced, wanted to be healthy for his sons, 2 and 5.

Since 2000, Kane had worked as head pro at Tucson’s Randolph Golf Complex.

He played golf professionally until 1992. As a student at the University of Arizona, he earned an All-Pacific-10 Conference recognition in 1987.

Information from the (Tucson) Arizona Daily Star was used in this report.
