ANAHEIM, Calif. — A car driven by a 17-year-old struck a group of family members crossing the street carrying Disney souvenirs on Monday, killing a 7-year-old boy and leaving several others with critical injuries, police said.
The driver, who was not identified because he is a minor, and a 17-year-old passenger of a Cadillac were not injured following the incident that took place shortly before 6 p.m. in front of the Anaheim Convention Center and just blocks from Disneyland, said Sgt. Rick Martinez.
The driver was released after being questioned by police. Television images showed him sitting on a curb following the accident, with his face buried in his folded arms.
Police said it was not immediately known what caused the accident but drugs and alcohol were not factors.
“The vehicle did stop shortly after impact,” Martinez said. “But as to why he didn’t see the people is something that we’re obviously going to have to investigate.”
The 7-year-old boy died at the scene, he said.
An adult male, a teenage boy and a 9-year-old boy in the group sustained critical injuries and a woman holding an infant child received minor injuries, police said. They all were transported to the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center.
Police said the family, believed to be from the San Francisco area, had visited Disneyland, which is next to the convention center.
